Job Overview
Location: Brampton, Ontario
Structure: Large single-story detached residential home
Problem: Squirrel activity in attic space
Service: Squirrel removal and full roofline exclusion
Visits: Three
Summary
Our team addressed reported squirrel activity originating from the roofline of a large single-story home. Inspection confirmed access through a compromised drip edge section where shingles could be lifted. Humane one-way exclusion was installed, followed by comprehensive vent and roofline sealing. A final visit confirmed successful removal and no further activity.
Background / Property Context
The property is a large detached home with an expansive roof surface, multiple roof penetrations, and numerous vents. The roof design and exposure increase the importance of proper sealing at edges, vents, and intersections to prevent wildlife access.
Customer Concern
The homeowner reported hearing noises in the attic during early morning hours, consistent with squirrel movement. Concern was raised about potential damage to the roof structure and insulation if the activity continued.
Inspection & Findings
During the initial inspection, our technician identified a primary entry point along a loose section of drip edge where the shingles met the fascia. The shingles in this area could be lifted by hand, creating an opening into the attic space. No other active entry points were observed during the first visit, though multiple vulnerable roof features were noted.
Cause Analysis
Drip edge sections can become loose over time due to weather exposure or incomplete fastening during installation. Elevated rooflines with accessible edges allow squirrels to lift shingles and exploit gaps at fascia intersections. Once identified, these areas are repeatedly used due to ease of access and shelter availability.
Treatment / Removal
A humane, non-lethal squirrel removal process was implemented. A one-way door was installed at the confirmed entry point to allow the squirrel to exit without re-entry. The surrounding area was temporarily sealed with galvanized steel mesh to control movement and guide the animal out safely.
Exclusion & Repairs
Following confirmation of squirrel exit, full exclusion work was completed, including:
- Twenty roof vents secured with galvanized steel vent cages
- Three plumbing vents sealed at their bases with galvanized steel mesh
- One wall vent protected with a galvanized steel cage
- One roof soffit intersection reinforced with galvanized steel mesh
All materials were mechanically fastened and fitted to match existing roof and wall surfaces.
Outcome & Confirmation
On the final visit, no further squirrel activity was reported by the homeowner. The one-way door was removed, and all exclusion work was inspected and confirmed intact. No additional wildlife issues have been observed since completion.
Technician Notes
Ardian conducted the inspection, exclusion installation, and final confirmation. Work was completed safely across a large roof area, with attention given to all identified vulnerable access points.
